What to do when technology fails in the classroom
Hi everyone! I didn't choose this topic randomly actually ,I kinda was pushed by my presentation last week but also from my classmate's. We experienced such trouble with our technological tools and we had to come up with some techniques and strategies so as the class would not fail .Of course that we could do more and I did some research about what alternatives can make use of in order to keep on with the lesson when technology fails.
First of all ,incorporating technology in the classroom can mean having to deal with some common technological glitches like low internet access, uncharged computers ,videos which cannot be played or applications which cannot be opened in other computers, these were some issues that we experienced last time .Although we did make use of technology using the PowerPoint, the song ,video etc.So technology fails and we shall be realistic since perfection is outside its programming .
Technology fails when it is needed most .This undoubtedly stands for real .Here are some useful tips to prevent these failure :
- try to have some backups ,not just of data but also devices ,hardware and systems. For example you can install different browsers on your computer.
-Be a problem solver ,embrace problems ,own them. You can do this by knowing the basics such as checking if it is plugged in or reboot .Also you can google the problem to find the solution and of course be a risk taker like don't drown ,be creative.
-Build in alternatives ,this is the most important one .What to do ? Well ,first of all don't expect technology to remain unchanged ,prior to teaching ,go through the tool you are going to use or the process you are teaching and see it works the way it should. Secondly, you may use this as a teteachable moment.Show students how you handle stress ,troubles and frustration. It is a learning experience and an opportunity to stretch that magnificent big brain to devise a solution and also a chance to make students reflect upon. In addition, it is quite pointless to apologize, save your apologies for something that you caused.
I think I've learned a lot about teachers by the way she handles a lesson plan that explodes .Fortunately with these tips hopefully you will have less explosions on the tech side of your classroom. Remember technology is the third leg to the "inevitable experiences" stool taking this in a universal context. So the only thing you can control is how you react to it.
