What to do when technology fails in the classroom

Hi everyone! I didn't choose this topic randomly actually ,I kinda was pushed by my presentation last week but also from my classmate's. We experienced such trouble with our technological tools and we had to come up with some techniques and strategies so as the class would not fail .Of course that we could do more and I did some research about what alternatives can make use of in order to keep on with the lesson when technology fails. First of all ,incorporating technology in the classroom can mean  having to deal with some common technological glitches like low internet access, uncharged computers ,videos which cannot be played or applications which cannot be opened in other computers, these were some issues that we experienced last time .Although we did make use of technology using the PowerPoint, the song ,video etc.So technology fails and we shall be realistic since perfection is outside its programming . Technology fails when it is needed most .This undoubtedly stands f...

Teaching with PowerPoint

Image
Hi everyone, how it's going ? Slowly we are heading to the end of the subject and I just realized that I was kinda delayed in posting for the PowerPoint use in the class since this teaching tool is really important. Each of us has used PowerPoint as a means of making a presentation in front of an audience just like in the picture above .And we all know it's hard and it demands hard work ,concentration and rehearsing. Although ,this method cannot be used only to make presentations on certain topics but also to teach students different skills of the target language in our case. In many ways, PowerPoint can be a very useful tool to present material in the classroom and encourage students learning .It can be used to project visuals which would otherwise be difficult to bring in the class. However here there are some useful tips for creating more effective slides. As research has shown ,reading and listening seem to conflict cognitive processes, meaning that the students...

How to encourage student participation in class

Basically, we all know that when the students are unwilling or reluctant to participate in the classroom activities ,teaching cannot go on and we teachers get frustrated. Just like Euripides says " learning is more effective when it is an active rather than a passive process ". Getting the students involved in the class not only adds interest to a course, it also provides a way for us to promote active learning and asses understanding. While it's common for only a few people to speak up in a group ,there are plenty of simple ways to help  break down this natural barrier and get our students participating. And below in this blog you will encounter some methods which may help you foster an environment where all students feel comfortable to participate in the classroom activities. Ideally, the goal of  increasing participation is not to have every student involved in the same way or at the same rate. Instead it is to create an environment in which all participants have the...

Use of Videos to teach language

Students today are technologically connected .When you as a teacher use videos in the classroom it stimulates student interest but not only .If you are unaware of what video could do in your classroom ,how could you elevate your student's academic success and what types of videos you could use in your classroom then this blog will enlighten you . There are many benefits to using videos in education as shown in several decades of research especially in the recent years with the development of technology. Videos are easy to create and powerful if you wish to integrate technology into the classroom .Long lectures ,heavy textbooks ,boring activities seem outdated, especially when compared to the powerful engagement that videos can offer. By exploiting the medium's power to deliver images and not only ,teacher can  engage students in problem solving and investigative activities. Videos help students practice media literacy and critical viewing skills. In addition they provide...

Reflection on webinars

Having watched two long videos one after the other really got me super tired .But I have to say that I enjoyed  particularly the second one ,that with the proverbs which was entertaining and interesting though. So another new term ,we already understood it from the videos that webinars are seminars conducted online via internet connection. To put it simply ,it is an online event, which connects individuals with viewers across the world,in our case the educator with the students. The first video was about discovering grammar and grammar lesson planning .The main concern of that webinar class was how to make grammar less boring.I totally agree with the final thought that teachers do also want the self expression of grammar rules in communication.Which means that they also need the creative ability to combine vocabulary with the grammer aspects in their real life interactions. The video about the proverbs and quotables really got my attention as the questions, quotations and sente...

Project based learning

Image
Hello everyone, project based learning is the topic we have to reflect upon this week.Actually this is one of the methods which encourage students to engage and to investigate in order that they gain skills and knowledge . PBL allows teachers to expose students to a wide variety of 21st Century skills, and allows students to interact with curriculum in a way that is authentic and fun. Project-based learning is a dynamic classroom approach as students are completely active while making relations of the lesson topics to real world issues by getting a deeper understanding of it.However the role of the teacher is undenial during the process as it requires a lot of prep work on the part of the teacher .There are four steps to helps us as teachers create a Project Based-Learning classroom. 1. Begin at the end, when planing a project ,we shall begin with the end in mind.Coming up with new ways to present information and showcase student learning can be a challenge but there exist lots o...
